Puerto Plata City Tour (Amber Museum, Cable Car Ride up to Botanical Gardens, Rum Factory tour, shopping). Damajagua. La Isabela in the Dominican Republic is considered the first formal European settlement in the New World. The first settlement regardless of other factors is La Navidad in neighboring Haiti. It was founded by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage in 1493. This was after discovering that the fort of La Navidad, which he had constructed during his first trip, had been totally destroyed by the native Taino aborigines. The settlement was established to search for precious metals. Later discoveries proved that the Vikings had established a settlement in the province of Newfoundland, Canada, under the leadership of Leif Erikson in the 11th century. However, this settlement was abandoned and destroyed shortly afterwards due most likely to fighting with the Beothuk tribe. Canada would not be visited again by Europeans until John Cabot's landing in 1497. The town was surrounded by a wall, with afortified storehouse at one end and Columbus's citadel at the other. It had a plaza on the water, with several stone buildings and 200 palm thatch huts provided housing for most of the town's inhabitants. Archaeological evidence shows that there was a second settlement near the walled town, that served as a center for ceramic production, industry, agriculture and ranching. Isabela was only inhabited for five years, and disease, overwork, Indian hostilities, food shortages and mutinies occurred almost immediately, and it was abandoned when Santo Domingo was established in 1496-1497. The colony didn't prosper, due, partly, to Columbus's bad administration complicated by the resistance of Indians, the lack of -gold in the region and the failure of the crops. It was systematically abandoned in the 1497 and the colonists and the resources were dedicated to Santo Domingo and the Conception of The Vega. The area has received considerable archaeological and historical attention from the end of the XIX century until today. On the other hand the value and importance of the Isabela, place of the transcendent encounter of two worlds, weighs in all America and the world.
