Although this was the first custom-built tourist haven in the Dominican Republic, the beaches are not the greatest. They're relatively narrow, and subject -- as most beaches are -- to the vagaries of hurricane erosion. Don't expect Robinson Crusoe-style isolation either; you'll never be alone on a stretch of beach in Puerto Plata, since the beach is shared with the residents of at least nine hotels, all jostling for position. However, if you enjoy beige sand that's rarely too hot to walk on, and a never-ending array of watersports kiosks, chaise longues, and loudspeakers projecting merengue music, you'll be happy here. One important note: It rains a lot in Puerto Plata during the winter. If you want guaranteed sun, go to Punta Cana or the beaches on the southern coast. The beach at Luperon sits in a large bay, and offers a wonderful setting with its' soft white sand and incredible clear waters. The beauty of the beach at Luperon is the fact that it is so sheltered and offers plenty of shade, with numerous palm trees lining the sand. Luperon is great for snorkelling, with an abundance of coloured tropical fish found in the bay, and the beach-front hotels can arrange all manner of watersports. Souvenir stalls line the walkway to the beach, and the village, with its' colourful wooden homes, offers more gift shops selling local crafts. Basic pensions are available in the village of Luperon, more suited to the independant or budget traveller. The Puerto Blanca Marina, a popular docking spot for vessels of all sizes, sits just outside the town of Luperon, and provides the only safe harbour in the Dominican Republic. Of course, you'll find other beaches besides Luperon Beach in the Dominican Republic. Another location you might enjoy is Playa Dorada, where you'll find plenty of people. You'll find it 7.7 miles to the east . Visitors to the Dominican Republic's north coast will be drawn to the allure of popular Playa Dorada. These beaches are awash with hotels and attract tourists and locals with great surf and an array of water sports. The white and gold beaches of Playa Dorada are warm and inviting and not far from some of the area’s best local attractions. Luperon Beach may not be right for you , but the Dominican Republic has plenty of other options for travelers who don't wish to visit this beach.
